FREDERICTON (GNB) – The recruiting of 49 returning officers for the October 2024 provincial general election has begun. Elections NB launched the online portal today which will be used as part of a new merit-based recruitment process.
“We are pleased that we are now responsible for hiring the people who will fill these positions which are integral to the electoral process,” said Chief Electoral Officer Kim Poffenroth. “Using a merit-based process will ensure we recruit returning officers that are equipped with the skills required to manage today’s complex electoral processes.”
In June 2022, the provincial government passed an amendment to the Elections Act making the chief electoral officer responsible for the appointment of returning officers.
The competition closes on Sept. 15. Training of the returning officers and other returning office staff will begin in March 2024.
