FREDERICTON (GNB) – With four days to go until the close of nominations, the clock is ticking down for candidates considering running in the May 10 municipal, district education council and regional health authority board elections. The deadline for filing nomination papers is Friday, April 9 at 2 p.m.
“We encourage candidates not to wait until the very last moment to file their papers as there is always the possibility that there may be some issue that has to be corrected,” said Kim Poffenroth, New Brunswick’s chief electoral officer. “Potential candidates should leave themselves enough time to correct errors or clarify details before the April 9, 2 p.m. deadline.”
As of today, names have been submitted in 100 of the province’s 104 municipalities for various council positions; currently there are four municipalities where no candidates are running for any of the vacant council positions. Twelve positions for mayor remain vacant, with no candidates having offered in those municipalities, and 11 councillor positions remain vacant across the province. A total of 243 council positions across the province will be elected by acclamation unless additional candidates file their nomination papers in the next four days.
Forty of the 68 district education council positions still have no candidate offering, and five of the 16 regional health authority board positions remain without a candidate.
“Previous elections have often seen candidates filing in the last few days prior to the deadline, but with the shortened work week due to Easter, we want to ensure potential candidates are reminded of the upcoming deadline,” said Poffenroth.
