FREDERICTON (GNB) – Three individuals from the Fredericton area entered guilty pleas in court today in connection with violations under the Political Process Financing Act dating back to the Progressive Conservative leadership convention in October 2016.
Mike Allen, a registered leadership contestant, was charged with knowingly accepting a contribution made or financing provided in contravention of the act. His wife, Jennifer Leduc Allen, pleaded guilty to a charge of exceeding the legal limit of $6,000 in contributions and financing.
Allen’s official representative for the contest, Charles Wright, also entered a guilty plea to knowingly accepting a contribution made or financing provided in contravention of the act.
“We are satisfied with the outcome of this matter and trust that these convictions serve as notice to all of those involved with political campaigns in New Brunswick of the importance of complying with the rules,” said chief electoral officer Kimberly Poffenroth.
In a joint recommendation of the Crown and defence, Allen and Wright agreed to pay a fine of $10,000 each, while Leduc Allen was fined $5,200.
Charges against three other individuals were withdrawn by the Crown.
