FREDERICTON (GNB) – Nominations have opened in 12 communities to fill 14 vacancies in byelections to be held Monday, May 6. Nominations close at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 12.

Also on May 6, residents in the local service districts of Collette, the parish of Acadieville, the parish of Rogersville and parts of the local service districts of the parish of Harcourt, the parish of Saint-Louis and the parish of Weldford will vote in a plebiscite on forming a rural community with the Village of Rogersville.

Returning offices opened this week.

If more than one candidate is nominated for a position, a byelection will be held. The communities with vacant positions are:

  • Beaubassin East (one councillor for ward 4);
  • Bertrand (one councillor);
  • Blacks Harbour (two councillors);
  • Campobello (mayor);
  • Florenceville-Bristol (one councillor for ward 2);
  • Hanwell (one councillor-at-large);
  • Le Goulet (one councillor);
  • Paquetville (one councillor);
  • Rivière-Verte (one councillor);
  • Salisbury (one councillor);
  • Saint John (one councillor for ward 3); and
  • Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphaël (mayor and one councillor).

“Elections New Brunswick strongly encourages residents in these communities to consider offering for these important positions,” said Municipal Electoral Officer Kimberly Poffenroth. “Serving on council allows individuals to give back to their communities.”

Nomination papers may be picked up from a municipal returning officer or at local municipal offices, or they can be printed from the Elections New Brunswick website.
